Cam lobe to main brg race clearance
How much clearance is enough? I'm running SE .551 cams that don't hit. I set everything up to run SE .575's when I put on my 1275 kit and SE heads etc. I stopped the .575 install when I found the #2 cam had too much end clearance and the main drive gear rubbed the cam to cam gears. I have a hydraulic press now so I can fix that.
The .575 cams have <.010" lobe to main brg outer race clearance. A .005" feeler gauge slides thru, A .010" is TIGHT. The cams do "droop" a little just hanging in their case bushings not supported by their outer bushing so clearance will increase with the cover on.
How much clearance is needed? Or, how little can I get away with?
I still want to try the .575's.
This is on a '17 1200 FWIW.

.020" lobe to lifter boss clearance is reduced when the cam chest cover is installed. Lobe to main brg race clearance increases. How little cam lobe to race clearance is considered enough?

Just push inward on the cam while checking the clearance, to where the cam is sitting squarely against the bushing in the right case half. If you have .020 in that condition, you'll be good.
