Default Starter wiring

Hello everybody, I'm pretty new to the forum I've been reading the forum for a while now and posting for the first time. I have purchased an 84 sportster in a bucket or two and have finally got it all back together and nearly all wired up! Except I can not for the life of me figure out the how to wire up the starter. My understanding is that I need a second solenoid or a relay for the stater to get enough voltage to turn over. If anyone has any pictures or a wiring diagram specifically for the starter I would really appreciate it. Any suggestions on the solenoid or relay would also be appreciated. I would just like to let you know that I am in my third year of college and I'm not looking for the top of the line or all chromed model. I am looking for a middle of the road one that I will be able to rely on and not have to worry about it leaving me stranded. All help on the mater is greatly appreciated and I am looking forward to your answer!

Most bike shops will sell, or can order, a starter relay conversion kit. It's meant to replace older relays with the little black square relays. Comes with harness and relay for about 20 bucks. Just put one on mine this past weekend.

I've actually talked to you in the past on here, I used your diagram to wire the whole bike and for that I would like to say thank you so much!!! Now maybe I'm really just missing something here or just as likely the guy I bought this bike from did something screwy. The way I read your diagram the positive side of the coil is attached to the wire coming off of the run/kill switch,is that correct? I tested all wiring that appeared stock and left things where the were in they were hooked up. The wire attached to the positive side of the coil runs into a connection on either the starter or solenoid,I think it's the solenoid I'm unfortunately away from my bike and won't see it for awhile... Now when I attach that to the run wire and hook up the battery when I turn that button to the run position the Bendix gear kicks out emidietly! And nothing happens when I hit the start button which was connected to the States post. I've tried this with a secondary solenoid as would have been typical of the time with the same results... I haven't been slow to try it with a relay like in your diagram however. I only find one post on the starter other than the one with the jumper wire from the solenoid. I'm thinking I may need to pull the starter and bench test it or get it tested.

I appreciate the thought but I don't see how that will help me at this time. It's like when the parts store tries to sell me the H4headlight harness which would make it cleaner inside the headlight bucket but non of them say which wire is what and thats a3 post plug. I know what my wires are on the bike but have no way to now on the light so what would I conno where?? You know what I mean?

Power wire from the Battery Positive terminal is directly connected to the Power Terminal on Starter Solenoid... The other side of the Starter Solenoid Contacts goes to the Starter Motor itself...

Starter Relay activating coil is powered by Start Button on handlebar (which is fed by the Run/Stop Switch) - Otherside of Starter Relay coil is grounded to frame...

Starter Relay CONTACTS get power from the Accessory Circuit Breaker and, when the coil is powered, provides power to the Starter Solenoid (contact E below)...

The Starter Solenoid, when activated, kicks forward the Starter Pinion Gear into contact with the Clutch Ring Gear - While at the same time, the internal power contacts close the circuit between the Battery Supplied Power and the Starter Motor itself...
