When I first took my triple trees off, the bottom tapered bearing cage was all bent up. Looked like the PO upgraded to them and tightened things down with the weight of the bike on the fork. This made him think it was tightened correctly. Then he rode it and it hammered that lower bearing.

Bending the bearing cage is usually the result of removal.
I'd say this was a bearing that had been damaged during removal and then re-used.

I always use new bearings, and nothing wrong with having the weight of the bike on the bearing during assembly.

Okay but how do you adjust your preload with a fall test if the front end isn't off the ground?

I'm guessing by bearing cage you guys are talking about the cups/race.

They do need to be installed/removed correctly (and carefully). The frame can be damaged in this are and the cups won't fit correctly. (Often seen as an elongation after the bike has been smacked into the side of a bus).

I'm with Ferrous-head... I had a wobble in turns at 50-65 mph... bought Timken neck bearings and never looked back.. the wobble is gone... I will never run another bike without them.. there are upgrades that make our older biker safer, more reliable and will require less maintenance... you will feel the wobble in the handle bars.. if you don't the wheel bearings or swing arm bearings are suspect.. or a tire that is worn from being under-inflated or over inflated check to make sure your swing arm is mounted right.. you have to pull the tire to do this ... I rode a lot before learning to work on my on bike .. it's quite a learning experience ... the sad part is after tearing into my old 1970... it become like marriage ... you end up with a lot yourself going into the machine ... I can't bring myself to get rid of "her"..
