Default The parts are all here, now the fun begins

It started with noticing that the rear tire and brakes were getting a little thin when I did the Cripple Creek Veterans Rally this summer, so the better half got on eBay for a new MT66 tire and I hit JP Cycles for some rotors and pads, and you know, while I have it apart I ought to... Well, you know how these things go.
So now there's a set of 13" Road King take offs, two wheels to lace into one, and a new tube that the better half scored for dirt cheap on eBay, the Schrader valve kit from the stealership, and a lowering kit from JP just in case I find the 13' shocks a bit too tall. I should have everything I need except for some odd hardware and what not.


So because of Thanksgiving I found an unexpected weekend at home (a rare occurrence for an over the road truck driver), and my first thought toward productivity was to get the wheel laced up, but I couldn't find my T45 socket to get the rotor off the hub, so I turned my attention to the shocks instead. Since my lift is a couple of Peterbilt brake drums and some 4x4s, that requires some help from the better half and teenage daughter, and a lot of muscle and finesse lifting one end at a time.


I took the saddlebags, sissy bar, and rear seat off to make lifting a bit easier. I think when it comes time to take it down I'll pull the front seat and tank to get a little more weight off.


The previous owner installed some 11" Progressive brand shocks, and running the numbers it appears they are actually for a Dyna, so describing the ride as stiff is a bit of an understatement. I love the stance and the look, and the handling is awesome, but even when loaded down for long 2up trip, the ride is a bit obnoxious. The Mustang Vintage Wide seats help some, but it's just not enough.


So I put the RK shocks on to mock things up and see what I was going to need for spacers and such. (Reading several threads on the RK install here in the forum certainly helped out understanding what I'd be up against.) It appears that with a little trimming of the fender brace cover, one washer is all I'll need to space things out for belt guard clearance, so I won't need to buy longer shock bolts. This will keep the air line pretty close to the fender brace cover so the saddle bags won't need to be spaced out too much further than what they were.

2 washers will space it out enough that I wouldn't need to do any trimming on the fender brace cover, but that puts the lock nut right at the end of the bolt threads on the lower bolt, so I think I'll be better off doing the trimming. The old Dyna shock was actually touching the belt guard.

I didn't think to take a picture of it, but I installed the left saddlebag and checked for clearance. It appears that without the lowering kit everything will clear the contoured hard back of the saddlebags. I might have some modification to do on the back of the saddlebags if I decide to use the lowering kit, but we'll cross that bridge if we have to.

Reading a lot of the suspension threads here it appears that bad things happen if you get the rear too high, so the first step is to get everything put together without the lowering kit and then test ride it to see how it does. I still haven't figured out a final routing on the hoses or mounting the Schrader valve, but there's several good ideas I've seen here in the forum, or maybe I'll come up with something new I like better.

Next home time I'll be rigging up a jig to drain and refill the shocks to make sure I have the correct amount of oil. I still haven't made a final decision on what brand or type, but I'll do some more reading and make that decision. (Input and suggestions from those that have done it would be nice.) I'll try to remember to take pictures and update this post as I go along.

Yes, but the rim is badly pitted. Hub and spokes look pretty good though, and it was cheap. And the standard rim with no hub and spokes was really cheap, so for a lot less than the cost of a good used standard lace wheel I can build one.
