No worries. The first of the Evo's (883's) can't keep up with a stock Ironhead. You might need a bit more oooomph for the late model 1200's. But you will have that.

For some reason most people never get that torque is what makes you accelerate, not HP. To get off the line quickly you really need a lot of torque down low. So for drag racing (or "Street Racing) that's what you need.

I race in what we call Period 3. Nothing later than 1962. Period 4 goes to 1972 and the Honda 4's dominate that class.

But the big meth burning Honda's can't keep up with me off the line. They are all built as HP engines. Not much torque down low. So I get to go into turn 1 in front of them.

No matter what you build out of this it will be a fun bike to ride. And it will confuse the hell out of the Evo guys.
Sounds like you run with a good organization ferrous. Here all they have is 500cc and below and 501 and up. No room for an ironhead.

Either way I just want this thing on the road. It won't be a high compression torque monster but it's gonna run. I'll have something to look forward to in the future

Buttoning up the cam chest with the r5s. Put together the oil pump and set pinion gear 5/16 from the surface. Breather timing is not perfect. If I move a tooth over it's even farther advanced out of the timing mark. I don't like close enough. I read other forums here where some say close enough is sometimes all you get. Is this true?

Time the oil pump first.
Then align the cams.

Yes sorry I should've specified with the timing mark dead center in the hole this is still where the breather timing sits. The cams just happen to be in there for the picture.

The breather alignment shown in post 115 is actually pretty close. I think you could run it like that with no problems.

The position of the pump drive gear on the pinion shaft affects this alignment. When the engine runs it gets pressed against the pinion gear.
If you have any end play on the drive gear and you push it all the way to the left it will move the breather hole a little closer to center.

You could do this by putting a shim between the gears.

Check out the pics of breather valves courtesy of Dr. Dick that show different hole locations relative to gear teeth.

The point is, yours may be about perfect (or not) the way it is. The only way to know for sure is to get out the degree wheel.

Personally I don't think you need to bother.

I read somewhere that OB shimmed or ground the pinion gear to get exactly the alignment he wanted.
I think this was because it wasn't changed (breather timing) on the first XR750's. They had oil return problems.
But (although I don't really know) I suspect that breather timing is like a lot of other things. There is an optimum RPM where things work great. Either side of that point is not as good.
In short, I don't think it needs to be "prefect" to work pretty much as intended.
You could possibly improve everything more by simply add a PCV valve to the breather tube. 78-79 XLCR's had them. Neat simple addition.
