Default just for my head

Hi all can someone put my mind at rest. I have had a few electrical problems on my 2004 883c. Sorted repaired or replaced ant damaged parts. The only part so far that isnt playing is the vss. Battery unconnected, key on/key off i get no continuity from any of the wires except the black earth. What i mean is i place one probe on the pin on the block that leads to the vss and the other to the corresponding block pin that it plugs into on main loom. I get no beep on multi meter. The only time it beeps is earth to earth between the blocks.
Is this normal ?some sort of Harley Davidson wizardry.
In my mind i should get a beep touching the probes to the matching colour wire
Am i right?
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Here some Sportsterpedia links for you:

Vehicle Speed Sensor:
http://sportsterpedia.com/doku.php/t...e_speed_sensor

5v Sensor Voltage Supply:
http://sportsterpedia.com/doku.php/t..._sensor_supply

With the VSS disconnected, you should have continuity between the VSS connector Pin1 (RED/White wire) and the ECM connector Pin3 (RED/White wire).

Yep done that it was fine. Surely if you connect one probe from the socket attached at the engine end and corresponding pin in the male socket it should beep too. I have the thing off the bike now to see if its damaged in any way. everything looks ok but i still would like to test it with a multimeter if i can.

The reason for all this is because i want to fit a Daytona clock. I have the wires in the kit to run magnets on the front rotor with sensor etc but apparently you can use the speed sensor wiring in the bike thats already in the loom. whats online is all a bit sketchy and the instructions to wire it up are crap. I need to test the old vss or would it be easier to leave it all connected up and just fit the rotor magnets and patch wiring and leech into the loom for power.

Unless you get 5v to the VSS connector Pin#1, the sensor will not work.
Pin#2 is the signal sent back to the ECM
Pin#3 should be ground

You must have Power & Ground (on the right connection) before you'll get that signal on Pin#2 to go to the ECM.

If you don't have continuity between the ECM & the VSS, you'll need to track down where the broken connection is located.
