I had more fun with my full face and no windshield on the first ride in a long time than I ever did with my windshield and any helmet behind it.

I'm thinking about adding a little fly screen, but I don't see a full windshield going on anything of mine that doesn't have 4 wheels. My helmet does pretty well, but a little pocket of dead-ish air above the tank would be nice on those windier days.

I don't use either so I guess neither is a priority. Nothing but my hair blowing in the breeze.

I'm sure there are a lot of threads on this subject already but I would think it depends on your riding style, environment and chance fait.

It is gloriously fun to ride without either. As a matter of fact, it's usually always fun up until the crash.

A windshield (by default) blocks the wind in front of you.
This is nice feature at about 80 mph on the interstate with crosswinds and stinging rain.
Running around in the woods it'd probably be a hindrance though.
There is also an XLF thread with a pic of a windshield full of bugs however from a cross country ride I believe.
But, during a crash, the windshield stays on the bike.... you may not.

A FF helmet won't necessarily make one more safe during a crash.
That depends on many factors. Mainly, if the helmet fits your head properly.
Centrifugal force will take any style helmet off your head as will a wrong angle hit.
You should choose a helmet mainly for fit and then worry about comfort. They are not all the same and neither are our noggins. It has to be tight whether it boggles up your ears or not.

A FF will limit noises as well as side vision more than other style helmets. These are qualities that can be adjusted to.

I voted FF since after watching bird guts dissolve on my FF shield and then go behind me, I'd rather not chance obtaining an opinion on which bird tastes better cooked rare. I have the tall HD windshield which did not stop the bird from doing a 'truth or dare' line run across the road.
As a child, I learned to take hits to the face. ...
but not running 60 mph on 2 wheels. I can talk about it now because I had the FF helmet.

I wouldn't mind a quick release windshield for the longer hauls and colder weather but for the most part, the kind of riding I do, I don't want one. However, with my setup, the speedo is in the way and it's not possible. Yeah, the bigger bugs can smart, but we suck it up and keep on keepin' on.
The majority of bikers around these parts do not wear helmets of any kind except maybe the kiddies on the jap junk poppin' wheelies around town and mommy & daddy make them most likely.

Full face, bought my first one in 2004 after riding over 50 years, and won’t go back.

I will never ride without a full face helmet, I think it's absolutely suicidal to wear anything less. If you face plant coming off a push bike at 10mph you get messed up, let alone 40+.

I won't tell anyone what to do with their lives, but one of the reasons insurance is so high for me is from compensating people not wearing the right gear, and that really pisses me off.

Have had both windshields and full face helmets before. Wore the full face helmets more because of the cold than for safety. Now ride with no windshield and an open face helmet with wrap shield on it. When I was using the windshields and full face helmets I was riding to work before daylight and sometimes the temperature was down below freezing. 17 mile one way ride. Now I am retired and mostly just ride in decent weather during the day time. Occasionally I might ride on a cold morning for a toy ride or something like that. I got leather face mask and neck gaiter to go under the face shield for those times. Long hauls I got leather bandana to wear over my mouth and neck to keep the june bugs from drawing blood.

Florida passed the very first helmet law in 1967. I was riding a 305 Superhawk. Had to go buy a helmet and the only choice was white open face. Rode most of my life with open face helmet with wrap shield (like a dirt bike shield). Maybe it is just habit. Full face helmet makes me feel like I am cut off from the world inside a bubble. Florida no longer has mandatory helmet law, but I still wear one even if it is just to ride down to the mailbox.

I hate windshields and prefer the faceshield option because there are times I can flip it up and ride with the wind in my face. However there have been times on the highway or on back roads when a huge bug hit the faceshield so hard I expected to see it crack and imagined what the bug would have done to my face if the shield was up.

Well the OP asked the question 13 years ago, so I hope he has figured out what he needs by now. But, the original question and the poll was which would you buy first?

I'd buy the full face helmet first, because that's the style helmet I prefer. Then what I did was keep an eye on Craigslist for a quick detach windshield. I ended up getting two of them, a short one for $25 and a tall one for $50.

On our hot humid Washington DC summer days I prefer no windshield, but for long trips or when the weather cools down I clamp the windshield on and enjoy the protection. Just yesterday I had to make a ride up to Baltimore about an hour and half away. Was very glad I had the windshield on when I hit the two little thunderstorms with no rain gear on. Legs were wet from the knees down, arms were wet to the biceps, but most of me was nice and dry.
