Im glad you are having a good time Paul!!

I have not made my mind up on the front yet, mostly since I havent had time to do any research. I now have all the parts needed to build the forks with the stock lowers/ brake caliper. No time to do it now, so maybe I can get some numbers together tonight or tomorrow.

After work on Tuesday, the brown truck delivered my new ultra heavy duty tube. So Miz and myself worked on putting the new tube and tire on the 18 inch rim. That was a pain, but didnt take too long. Miz had to go make supper, but I figured I had time to put the tire on, so tried that. I found out that the bearings inside the wheel worked perfectly with my axle...but...spacers are the wrong length. I need to figure out what I have vs what I need for this. The belt sprocket bolted right up, and the rotor was already on but will work. One of the 5 sprocket holes is stripped out, so I will probably try a helicoil on that. The spacers are the main thing now.

I looked on Ronnies HD microfiche and googled, but cant tell what this rim came off of. It has stamped on it : AMF PN43539-79 and is a 18 x 2.50 rim. Makes me wonder if I really need a 3inch rim instead of some different spacers? Wonder if the IH Sporties were a bit narrow in the swing arm width compared to the EVOs. The stock 16 inch rim is 3in I believe with a 130mm tire, the 2.5 rim with the 4.5 should be the same as a 120mm tire.

Any ideas on how to figure out the needed spacer lenghts? I need to measure the stock rim etc. The bearings inside the 18 rim have a bit of a spacer built in looks like and the stock rim has a flat faced bearing(sealed). Maybe I need to put the stock rim style bearing inside the 18 rim?

Stuck on questions now, and not getting any wrenching done

I got to get back to work...

Alrighty. Looks like the axle and wheel bearings for a upgrade will only be about $75 or so from Dennis Kirk. I have looked at the Sportsterpedia but need to revisit it. I dont understand the spacers yet. If I change the axle I will need to change the wheel bearings to match-got it. Same wheel now but with different size axle. Is the difference in the spacers the ID or the lengths too?

Other questions : Is there a particular year or MoCo part number caliper to look for? Or is any big twin after 08 going to work?

Will my current 98 rotor still work or will I need one of those too?

Thinking about throwing in the towel on the AMF rim- the helicoil kit is $50 and the rim has already been drilled about half way. I'm thinking about saving my $50 and using that towards a different 18in rim. Plan to put the 16 back on for now until I get this front end figured out.

Do you know what you need for an axle? I have one in a box of parts I bought, don't know what it fits, but I can measure it for you. You can have it if it helps you out.

If I am looking at this right I can get a left side caliper for a 2010 VRod from HD for $190. The axle and wheel bearings from Dennis Kirk for $76 and the spacers for the rubber mount axle for another $46. If these look correct I may be able to do the upgrade for less than $400.

Will need to get the MC from Trace too. What else am I missing? I may search for a caliper on ebay but it would have to be cheap for me to buy a used one.
