This was the day the the Yankee's first meet 'The Crusher'. It was a run to Curtis's BBQ in Putney, Vt for lunch. The guy never stopped smiling. Over the next two years Crusher and I did multiple rides to central and western Massachusetts. He only lived a couple of towns away and when our schedules meshed we rode.
I was expecting many more of these rides this year but things have turned a different direction.

Crusher(Bob) on most rides was just a normal guy who liked (LOVED) riding his sporty. But there was a dark side to the Crusher. He suffered from some nasty mental health issues and depending on when or if he took his medications kind of dictated how the ride/talk was going to be. Then his mother died and he began to side into depression. We talked a lot on the phone and it seemed like he was starting to get his life together, but the dark side seemed to also be getting stronger.

On December 19th I got a phone call from Bob. He was in his shrink's waiting room and we were talking about a place to put the cash he would be getting from his mothers estate and that he was thinking of going to Florida to spend some time with his nephew. When he was called into see his doctor he thanked me for being his friend. The tone of his voice sounded odd when he made that statement.
On the 23rd I called and texted him to see when it would be a good time to drop off some venison for his Christmas dinner and I got no reply which was very unusual for Bob. His car was in the driveway so I figured he did go south.

On January 21st, after calling and texting Bob and still getting no reply I went by his house. It was the day he was going to sign all the paperwork for his mothers house sale. Nothing had changed at the house and the car still hadn't moved since the 19th of December. I made multiple calls on that day and got no replies. When I got home that night I did a google search for 'Robert Jones obituary' and got a hit right away.
The Crusher was found dead on the evening of the 23rd of December.

I personally think he took his life on the 19th of December after his doctors visit. It was the date of his last connection to the Forum.

Crusher was a very nice guy but a very nice guy with some very serious Mental Health issues that nobody was keeping an eye on since his mother passed. I thought that because he was going to a doctor he would be fine. Now I feel like I should have checked in on him more.

I'm still haunted by him thanking me for being his friend during our last phone conversation and knowing his body was still in his house on the morning of the December 23rd when I was knocking on his door.

Later Crusher!

We live in a bi-polar world where somethings are very difficult to correct - and never can be controlled from outside...

It is the height of personal integrity to have been 'his friend' and it shows in your being haunted by his passing. But DO NOT blame yourself - we can never make those critical decisions for others - It's a very fine line between the freedom we all should have and the potential of intervening in others lives to prevent their decisions...

Keep the faith - Just by reading your post, I'm certain you did him much good in 'being his friend'...

WoW I just saw this and sadly only met him once, He seemed to be a great guy and very up beat a couple years ago when I met him.

Unfortunately, I too had a very close friend pass while suffering from depression and health issues. I too had the feeling I should have checked on him because he had called and seemed off. They ruled his death as accidental but he had mentioned the day before that he was at the end and might mess up his medication. we talked for several hours after but guess the depression was too much.

Condolences to Bob's friends and family he will be missed by all.
Rest in piece Bob.

RIP to Crusher.. never rode with with him but he was a great participant in the Massachusetts page. This is very sad news. As we all know, mental health is a very serious issue, not to me taken lightly. That said, Mick, you did more than enough for him and I'm sure hes somewhere appreciating all you did for him. RIP
