Default Wiring harness questions

Pretty quick and simple.... Can you do a straight swap with wiring harness from 86 through 03? Or is it year/ model specific, so if I was to swap out my 86 883 with say a 92 883 wiring harness, would there be any issues?

A number of changes in the location of devices occured over the years - that means that the wiring harness runs wires to the specific locations of the devices for each year - It is far from generic...

One difference between 1986 & 1992 is the turn signal wiring - '86 used a auto-type blinker in the headlight & sent the actual flashing power for the lights thru the handlebar switches before going to the lights while in 1992 there was a TS cancelling unit which used incoming signals from the switches to the create power for and run the blinking lights directly from the TS module...

You'll need to consider all the various devices and their locations to determine how much effort is required to make a '92 harness work on an '86 bike - along with any consideration you might have of modifying the locations or eliminating certain devices...

The simple answer is no. For instance, my '93 has a harness that is specific to its year.

Why the swap? If the '86 wiring is old and fragile, the '92 isn't going to be much better. It's better to make a new harness (with new wire and connectors) using the '86 as a blueprint.

Oh I'm not actually going to swap out a 92 harness or anything, just a general question say for instance I got a whole new frame and found a pristine harness for next to nothing, if it would be a great difference.
