Default rattles like a can of bolts

I've been resurrecting a 93 XLH 1200 for about a year. When I bought it I dumped the oil and put in straight 30W dino oil. Got it running, changed the filter and used 20W50 dino oil. Last week changed to 20W50 synthetic (Lucas) and it sounded like every lifter collapsed. Drained out the synthetic and put Dino back in. One lifter (rear intake) is still banging away. Did the lifter collapse because of the oil? Will it restore itself with heavier oil (hasn't so far, 500 miles since) or is something else going south? (oil pump) 36k miles. Thanks

pull the lifter apart for inspection.
could have dislodged some trash.
check oil pressure with gauge
lifter should work with either oil

one side comment: some syn oil says they protect like a certain weight even though the vis is thinner.

I was wondering if the synthetic knocked some crud lose. I understand these are comparatively low oil pressure engine. I don't have a pressure gage but I could find one. I'm hoping to find out if the lifter is the problem or just the symptom. New lifter sets seem reasonably price on-line. I had a GM V6 get noisy lifters after the oil change shop put thin oil in. I was thinking this might be the same thing.

Update: Pulled the offending lifter out. Discovered the skirt broken off at the roller pin. The bearings for the follower roller are down in the engine somewhere. I bought this bike with the cams out of it and I'm suspicious of the PO's handiwork. New (used) lifters and a Genuine James gasket set ordered. I think I'll pull the cam case side cover off and look for bits.

They will be there on the bottom . I have lost roller bearings while riding in Oklahoma city.

Found em in the bottom of the cam chest in a bar parking lot .
Where we tore the engine down.
