Well before, approx 1.6 million earth years ago for current Hominids.
There was a large obelisk which gave curiosity for fermentation. How you may ask, glad you did. You see, fire being the second thing discovered, gave rise to heating sugars ( beehive honey and such ) and being such a lazy lot, was allowed to mix with natural yeast sources and bam...we had a party.
Fermentation begat bad decisions and some lout, during a particularly large rager, spouted he would float a half burned out sitting log across the pond with himself seated during such journey.
All wailed and laughed and dared. Now cornered, no choice and given the belly full of the nectar of the gods, he attempted it to prove himself to Sally the fruit gatherer.
Dragging the log and his pride, he launched the Homo Erectus Eric into the water.
Devine or random fortune winds carried himself and log more than 200 yards across the pond to the shore, at which he bellowed insults to amazed tribe numbers until a large Xenomorph ripped his spine through scull from his body.
The tribe in horror ran, however Sally later begat Folkie and taught him much of wot she saw.
Thus history has been exposed.

For full transparency, it was I that sent the Obelisk. A quite outrageous Asgardian planet orgy was in full swing and I lost the lanai OB on a bet. Obilisks are Asgardian televisions you see. The images were witnessed by earth apes and our programming was emulated by wot they saw, until it was later shut down by Asgardian Societal Systems. Bloody lot they are.
Anyway to get back on point, Kraken jaw bone hewing for protein harvesting on any planet is required viewing for children here. One can only suspect that the apes conceived this thought, used it as a proper tool and became omnivores, fermentation came right after fire but I have no first hand knowledge of this, perhaps Stairman is better suited for explanation during that time period.
