After checking this out a bit further I found they had wired the neutral switch to this gen light....

Stay on might mean your neutral wire is shorted.

I think you misunderstood, if you had read the thread you would see that someone put and earlier sporty head light shroud on this with the oil/gen light mounted on them. what they did as they wired the neutral switch to the gen light. I the switch is fine I discovered that when I put into gear the gen light goes out. So it is a matter of disconnecting the wire from the gen light to the neutral light mounted on the instrument cluster bracket....
