Unfortunately this is more common that one would think.
In a car the outer metal shell is the conductor for the lightning.
On a bike it's you.

I live here and I try to get indoors when the lighting starts. 15 to 20 trees on my land have been hit by lighting since I lived here. I had a llama standing in a field that was killed by lighting. The bolt struck a tall pine tree, ran almost down the tree, and then jumped over and killed the llama. It is not anything to play with and this is the worse area of the USA to be in for lighting strikes. I know of some who have been struck by lighting and survived and some who did not. When the summer thunderstorms come in off the Gulf Of Mexico and blow across the state, the safest place to be is inside a building, and even that doesn't guarantee the building won't get hit.

Thunder is rolling outside right now. I was mowing the yard. I put the mower up and got myself inside.

I lost a Great young Ballplayer to lightning in years ago. I had coached him In Little League, and was friends with his entire family. He was playing a High School game, the sky wasn't particularly threatening. His Dad was one of the coaches..........and Boom, he was dead!
