The pinion gear, the small one, the mark should be at 11 o'clock, It's your starting point.

Can someone please chirp in if I have installed the cams correctly because the factory cams got removed with the cover. Does the engine (front piston in cylinder and rear rod) vs. cam position marks look correct?

thanks

Troy

Looks pretty good to me. I think there's only one way to get all the timing marks to align and you got that covered.
Here was mine just for comparison .

What was reason for removal to begin with, just out of curiosity?

For some reason I was thinking my piston would have been at the compression stroke. But the marks line up on the cams. The cams are Hammer .560.

The bike seemed to use some oil (approx. 1qt/1,000mi). I decided to rebuild top end with a mild 1250 kit and replace the cams for a little more power. Although I will not be reusing the cylinders and pistons for this build (I will have to find a nice 883 for my OEM cylinders), the cylinders and rings all looked excellent to my untrained eye with 63,000 miles. The top of the pistons had a heavy layer or carbon build up except for the intake valve area. I my opinion oil was going past the valve seals. I have cleaned one piston with great success and will post pics this evening.

This is not exactly the proper location for this post but figured I would share here.

I have cleaned my piston with little effort by using Berryman Chem-Dip.

Both pistons had looked the same from the start. The results are from approx. 5 days of Chem-Dip and rinsing each night.

Yea that is definitely some carbon buildup. And that stuff did a hell of a job taking it off. I got some Twinkie take offs that aren't even that bad worth cleaning.
