Since I bought my 2005 XL883 last year, I've only used Amsoil motorcycle oil because that's what I've used in all of my bikes for the past 20 years. I don't know what the previous owner used. So far, in varying conditions of weather, types of roads and speeds, the temperature has never exceeded 200 degrees. I have the H-D analog thermometer oil cap. The temperature normally runs at 180 - 190 degrees. It only has 12K miles on it but it hasn't burned any oil either. I haven't confirmed the thermometer is correct but it is consistent in its readings.

UPDATE: Just finished riding a 200-mile round trip in 90 degree heat at +/- 70 mph on the interstate with hills. Immediately after stopping at the exit, I consistently got 230 degrees and after riding on secondary roads at +/- 55 mph, I consistently got 220 degrees. No oil consumption at all. Very happy with results. This H-D analog thermometer oil cap has come in handy and the quality is FAR better than the cheap plastic OEM one.

My '12 oil temp was 210* today on a ride. The engine/starter made scary noise when starting at this temp.
