Regarding the statement that Valvoline is a god product for sure, I used to believe that until I had a serious problem with it. Back in the late 70's, I bought a new Datsun 510 with a 4 cylinder engine and used nothing but Valvoline 10W/40 motor oil (no synthetic back then) and I changed it myself every 3K miles. I never added any additives and I always changed the filter when I changed the oil. My commute to work was 15 miles, one way on the interstate, which should have caused no stress on the engine oil at all. After I had about 80K miles on the engine, I noticed the valve cover gasket was leaking a little. When I removed the valve cover, it felt like it weighed a ton. The inside was completely caked with what looked and felt like solid black tar. I had to use a putty knife and screwdriver to dig it out, which was not an easy job.
Anyway, that was the last time I used Valvoline. It may be good stuff now but I've been burned once and I won't put my hand back in that flame again.
It's a pretty good stretch to blame the oil given I cant find this to ever have been a reported issue with valvoline or most any oil for that matter. Except the penzoil thing many moons ago. I've been using valvoline for as long as I can remember and it's always been considered a top oil. A local indy back then said it's all he's ever used and I started using the straight 50 in my `73 and in all my vehicles at that time.
I dont run synthetic for the same reason NLXL stated. Not worth the extra money changing it every 2500 miles or I would run the emerald green VR1 for nearly double the cost.
When I tore my 05 down for the upgrade, I was able to get a good indication of wear and it was practically non existent at 23,000. The cylinders even had consistent crosshatching thru out. The po used Valvoline 4T conventional.
Like others have said, a good oil changed frequently is the key to longetivity. I put that at 2500 -3000 miles max but change it more like 2000. Even 1500 if I've been really hard on it.
Overkill maybe but cheap insurance comparatively speaking.
