The rules said you had to ride what you qualified, so if you blew up in the heat you were screwed. Nobody then had a complete spare bike but sometimes, well, a really fast and good repair job could be done inside the windowless van ... and if you were a real racer, hassling someone over a rules infraction would have been considered chickenshit. Beat him on the track was the way it was done then.

That's about as close as I can think to the "spare engine" myth ...

Thanks magneto and mrmom. I never even consider a pre 70 before researching previous threads and consulting the experts here

I've looked at almost a half dozen pre 70s. All with bad numbers, I found thanks to this forum. Could this be my first legit machine?

Usually, any serial on an ""as cast"" pad will be legit.

IE if you can see the sand casting pattern on the pad it's OK

Any grinding marks or flattening of the pad will indicate messing about.

This is a bad one, strangely enough used as a good example banner on a site trying to school us on legit serials...

The #2 and the #1 aren't the correct font either.

Default 1968 XLCH numbers

I've seen other treads dealing with this just not my particular numbers. First my title says 1968 assembled. Under the vin it has F10AB230. The frame has the 16 47584-58 casting number then on a flat area on the right upper down tube the same number from the title only it looks to me like it was maybe added.? Then on the motor on the left on the case between the cylinders there is also the same number on the pad. Further I checked on the right case next to the oil pump there is the same F10AB230 stamped and looks factory. Could this motor be a dealer purchased part, then someone added the number to the frame to satisfy the authorities? Thanks for any info! Rich. Oh it does have a original magneto.
