Default Breather in cam cover 1985

I needed a new cam cover for my 85 and purchased on Ebay. My old cover has a breather in the cover and a fitting and line that goes to the air filter.

Was this just an EPA thing in 1985 along with the Q-cams? Do a I need some sort of breather for the cover?

Thanks,

David

You need a breather. If it was in the cam cover, then yes you need a breather there. Newer models have them in the heads but some of us believe it's better to have it in the cam cover and have converted to one. There are inline options that are external like the Hayden Krankvent we use. Otherwise whatever was stock on your bike.
What you DON'T have to do or want to do for that matter is run it to your air cleaner to be burned in your combustion chamber. Best to vent it to atmosphere.

on my 82 there is a 1 way check valve baffle with a fitting to run a hose from fitting to air cleaner. there is also a small port 180* from the top one you can add another nipple and run a hose down along the bottom.

also there is a vent hose on a fitting on the back end of cove by sprocket that runs to oil tank.

your 85 will not have the genny mount hole but the big breather baffle is in the same spot.

with the hose from cam vent/baffle to air breather mine would puke oil all in the breather and all over the lifter block area.

I use a small cone breather right on the nipple, then added a nipple on the lower side and run a hose down along the frame to back of engine as it will drip a few drops of oil and the hose from rear of cam cover to oil tank with good clamps.

no more oil blowing on engine from airbox, better breathing of crankcase and the few drops of oil on down low in the daft under rear exhaust pipe and not on the rear tire.

if I recall your oil filter is up under the seat? and the hole for genny is cast closed.

I have the same results with where my hose runs on my cam cover breather mod on my 05. A few drops of oil mixed with water on the underside of my crossover pipe.
The hose from the oil tank to cam cover is also necessary to vent the oil tank.

Might want to check out the ultimate crankcase vent in the Sportsterpedia. It has very detailed instructions and might prove useful.
Any questions just ask.
