True EI is for sure better bar none.
Where do you stop? Get rid of the mile long valve train and go OHC? Change the chassis to a more rigid perimeter frame? No more drums? Ect, ect. There are improvements to all aspects. Losing a tappet roller will leave you on the side of the road just as easy. Easy enough to pull the tappets every so often and inspect. I think that is the same principle. Preventive maint is the key.
If they cant do some maint. they shouldn't ride a vintage mount, or learn how to maintain what they have. No maint will always reveal a weak link, one way or the other.
With this gentleman's ign question, sounds like he has two options. Run what he has and learn how to maintain a usable adv unit (which will run just fine down the road), or save up the coin and by a true EI and ignore the nosecone. Either way there is still a maint plan that cannot be ignored. Just 15 less due to no adv unit service.
No arguments here, just discussing old ironheads.
