Sumped oil.
My 98 1200 had sumped it's motor oil before l started stripping it down about a year ago, l'm planning to take the motor out using the "lay it on it's side and lift the frame off" method as my back is no good for lifting motors anymore.
My concern is what will happen to the remaining oil in the bottom of the motor?...is there any way of draining it other than cranking the motor?...bike has no electrics fitted at the moment so that would be tricky.
Thanks in advance.

why not use an over head lift. i use a chain foil and short nylon strap. do not worry about the oil. you cannot pump it all out anywho.

Yes, don't worry about the oil. It will drain back down to the sump when you stand the motor back upright. It can't go anywhere in the motor where there is not already oil.

You could pull the heads and use an extraction pump thru the cylinder holes.
But that still won't remove all of the oil. Be lighter though without heads and sumped oil.
The pump below was cheap at Harbor Freight. Works great.

Says a lot. ''It can't go anywhere in the motor where there is not already oil.''

West Marine sells a few good oil extractors, I use the one below on my dry sump bikes and a bigger 6 quart version for cars (extract the oil via the dipstick tube)

How much would the case, and crank weigh, if you removed the cylinders, cams, clutch hub and rotor components? On a rigid, you could also pull the transmission, which probably weighs a lot.

Nice Norton. Vacuum pumps work nice. Careful with that nice gas tank. Is that some blue on the nice exhaust pipe?

glutton for punishment
if i was only doing a top end, yep why pull the engine, BUT, if the engine must come out, why work in tight spaces, the bench is wide open.
like changing the cogsworth belts on a dogalac, easier to remove grill, ac condenser and radiator. you can't barely get your hand in the few inches they give you, you literally have to reverse how it was put together.
