Default Wheel swap

Hey everyone. What is required in order to remove the chrome spoked wheel from a 1996 Sportster 1200, and exchange it for a 9 spoke cast alloy wheel?
Axels the same? Spacers? Any info would be helpful.

Mike

I think the 9 spoke is the earlier wheel with taper bearings, but you would be changing them anyway, so not an issue.
Take a look here http://sportsterpedia.com/doku.php/t...k:evo:wheels01

It should give you all the info you need.

Hey Everyone. So here is a follow up question. The wheel I am looking at(used) is AMF PN 43499-78. It is stamped T19x2.15. It is a 9 spoke cast wheel. Would this fit the front of a 90's model Sportster?

If it uses 3/4" Timken bearings, it should fit on a 1990's 3/4" axle...

You need to get the right:
Hub Spacer (inside between the bearings)
Grease Seals
Speedo Pickup (if you're using one)
-- which often includes
-- the left outside spacer
Right outside spacer

Measurements of the spacers (internal & external) are important to get the right endplay on the Timken bearings.
It's also important to get the right positioning of the brake rotor in the caliper.

I'm not sure about the brake rotor size on that wheel.
I see that's a dual-disc wheel - Are you planning to use dual-disc brakes?
Rotor & caliper alignment then becomes even more important.

Check out the IH wheel section of the Sportsterpedia:

and see the Sportsterpedia EVO section on the wheels/axles/bearings:
