Default Oil Tank question

Still working on '77 Sportster ....

Last time had issues with start button and wiring ....That problem is fixed .
And finally bike is starting normally , however I have oil coming out of top of the oil tank . I have gradually drain the oil out the tank took almost 95% out last time I checked and it is still leaking oil . Not sure were that oil is coming from if my tank is 95 % empty . Is it possible that there is that much pressure that pushes that oil to the top pf the tank or my oil tank cap seal is bad ?

The oil leaks out the cap from the return feed. Either you aren't tightening down the wing on the cap tight enough or you have a bad seal in the cap.

Vibration may have worn a small hole while rubbing something the wrong way.

I have been known to pull oil tanks. Pressure check em with a air hose , regulated air at 30 psi or so, dawn dish-washing liquid mixed with water in spray bottle to make the bubbles at the leak area.

I braze weld with brass rod the tank and then re-paint and remount . Paying attention to the area where the rubbing occurred and rectify that situation so it does not happen again.

I got a momentary contact switch I am going to mount on my jug and wire up to the starter relay under the seat because my handle bar momentary switch button is wearing out and I have no access to that part presently.

Edit; Just mentioning the above in case the oil is coming from somewhere else than the oil cap gasket. Like a small wear hole hole on the lip .

Might be a plugged vent line?

The cork gasket in the cap is replaceable, it comes in a full gasket set.

Cap may have been over-tightened and the ears are bent.

A friend of mine bought an 88" a few years ago as a basket case. He spent a whole summer fighting with the same kind of problem. He put it aside for about a year and after researching the causes, found out just because an expert bike builder rebuilt the motor doesn't mean he didn't miss something. His problem, pumping oil out of the oil-bag (or tank as some call it), was a broken check-ball spring in the oil pump. Now on my '06 Sporty, the check-ball and spring are located in the oil filter housing. I think if my spring broke or collapsed it would pump oil directly back to the oil-bag causing it to overflow. Hope this helps.

Smile Problem Fixed

Thanks everyone.

Replaced cork seal and problem is fixed. Waiting for new tires and inner tube.
After that is done will need to play with carb little bit and that should be it .
