04 883
I found a low mileage 2004 XL883 that I am interested in but the vehicle has an engine that has black painted crankcases.
I do not recall black crankcases being available in 2004.
Am I missing something?
The owner says the frame and engine numbers match.
Thanks
Don

Is it a XL883R? Dual discs up front?

The best there is, you will also get Andrew gears in it.
Just beware of high lift cams.

The vehicle is not an 883R. It has a single disc front end, standard single speedo, bars with black painted fenders, etc.
All the info I have on a standard 883 says it never came with black crankcases.

Any chance you have the VIN? Did you ask the seller about the black cases?

When I asked the owner about the black crankcases, he started to get defensive and said he bought the bike this way. And when I mentioned that 04 883's didn't come with black cases he called me a "hater" and the conversation ended.
He did not supply the VIN
The bike only has 2,700 miles and looks to be in excellent condition but the "red flags" have pretty much put an end to purchasing this. I only ask here about the bike so I am more informed about 2004 Sportsters with black crankcases.

He called you a "hater?" WTF?
I'd tell him to piss off. Buy a rigid mount instead, 1991-2003. Much better bikes than the bloated rubber mounted sissy bikes.

Sounds like a weird reaction and agree to the red flags part. If you get bad vibes from a seller probably better to move on. There's plenty to choose from particularly if you are patient.
