Thank you for the link. Made me ponder the decision to weld. With the countershaft permanently beefed up there will never be a speedo installed there again. A plug would not provide any structural strength and could be a potential leak.

the way I see it the plug would add structural strength because it fills the opening left after removing the speedo drive the same way the speedo drive did.welding could warp the case.i like the way Dirty Harry finished his.after removing the drive gear he left the speedo drive in there to fill the void.if you wanted to keep the original look you could hook up the speedo cable to it.

Finally got around to attacking the drive gear with an angle grinder today. That sucker came off like a hot knife going through butter.
