You don't even have to go to a side mount. Sure, the touring bikes, dynas, older/newer sportsters all run that, but I never hear of people blowing the guts out of the one on their sport bikes like these do. They're all like what we're running on the rears. They run them straight, without a 90 degree joint in it, but still, I've got mine mounted on the side for my rearsets, and it's no better than before. I'm sure there's something similar of higher quality out there.

If someone wants to go figure out what bike has something good on it with the same bolt spacing, I'd gladly switch mine out for something without a HD logo on it if it means it works better (especially since you don't see the logo anyway...). I just don't want to go buying up rear masters from random bikes just to figure out something with our bolt spacing.

Default Replacement Master Cylinder

After a bit of study I found a picture of the 2014 and up Sportster mounting system on Ronnie's microfiche. The 14 and up bikes do have an additional bolt hole on the frame. Welding on an extra stud for your bolt would not be too much trouble, difficult but not impossible. Then you could swap out the earlier master cylinder parts for the '14 and up. However I will probably do my own Rube Goldberg engineering and probably add the extra stud but I'll just make an aluminum adapter plate and mount one of the 96-03 Sportster master cylinders and fab up the linkage. These had a good service record and Harley should never have abandoned them! This is a pic of a Drag Specialties replacement unit which is brand new and still for sale.

Default Master Cylinder Upgrade

I would advise against trying to run this '14 + up master cylinder setup on earlier Sporties without adding the third bolt hardpoint to the frame. It's a simple matter of welding on a 3/8-16NC bushing to the frame. The inboard side of the bushing needs to be contoured to the frame. The EVO Sportsters [86-03] had to have a reinforcing bracket on the outboard of the pulley cover because of breakage problems. I'm sure there's a reason why H-D added the third bolt hole to the frame.

Default More Study on brake Retrofit

After some more study on the brake retrofit I've decided welding the extra thread boss onto the frame is unnecessary IMO. After studying a microfiche from Ronnie's H-D I saw an adapter bracket for the '14 and up master cylinder. There was not part number for it but after I looked at it I realized it was designed to run the newer '14+ master cylinder without the footpeg bracket. The reason for the third and newer bolt hole was to give the adapter bracket a place to bolt on. So I'm sure that you can run the new master cylinder on the pre 14 bikes with no trouble. Two 3/8-16 bolts [gr. 8] should have more then adequate holding power. That's the way I'm going to run my retrofit setup. If it proves inadequate I'll weld the third stud onto my frame.

Just to confirm, you are adapting the newer master cylinder to a rubber mount correct?

If so I'd be interested in seeing photos as I am tired of replacing my master cylinder once a year

That's the plan. I have the '14+ right footpeg/master cylinder bracket and the master cylinder. I still need the midcontrol push rod, the pushrod pin and it's circlip. I'll need to get new brake line plumbing and a new pressure switch too. I also plan to replace the 06 caliper. I'll probably use a Performance Machine 4 piston caliper. The stock Sportster '14+ caliper is a 2 piston unit. I've got a spare rear caliper bracket which I have to modify to take the PM caliper.

Jumping in here.. I have an 05 1200R and just shy of the 30k mark. Recently my rears have been kind of weaker than usual. I push down far on the brake to even get it to stop. Today i leave the house and the pedal goes all the way down and little to no brake. I get home and check the pads and the fluid.. all look good. I bled the brake (which took forever.. i'm not new to bleeding the brakes). Still no resistance at all, and i'm positive there is no air in the fluid. Do you think this is the master cylinder needing a rebuild? thanks for your comments.
