Ask them to demonstrate any other bike in stock that has that much runout on the front tire. If they can’t find one to equal the runout on the tire they supplied you, smile and say “ Please try again with a replacement tire. This one is unsafe”!

I actually thought about trying to get them to re-mount my old worn out tire. But I don't think they keep old tires around after replacement. Unfortunately I don't know any other Sportster riders around me. I'm pretty sure a new tire/wheel off a showroom 2018 Iron would fit ...

Also, the tire is an official HD Dunlop 401.

So they tried to smooth things over, but regardless of my video of the spinning tire with 1/8" side to side movement ...

The steering bearings are good, the tire is good, the rim is good

The wheel bearings were bad (well they showed me a couple of bearings that were fairly tight)

The manager assured my he took it up to triple digits and it was fine. Seems improved.

I rode it home.

you don't want to give it too much of a shake at speed, just a nudge, and it's ok

I took it up to 90 and it tracked fine, not jiggly

I still want to check it on the lift and spin the wheel.

But next up is to put some miles on the new tires on one of my favorite twisties.

Update: since September the bike never felt quite right.

So last week I went to another dealer for a second opinion.

They couldn't guarantee replacing the steering head bearings would fix it ... but they did.

I cruised home at up to 85mph on the freeway. Shook the bars and it came right back to straight. Even in rough winds today the bike was rock steady.

I lifted it and could look in and see the bearing! The dealer adjusted it and declared it AOK.
Glad you changed your dealer and are sorted now!
