another thing...
back in 96... at least in Italy the net was just born... and was not spread like today... then for an owner of a bike a FSM was the holy bible...
today if one guy is smart enough... can choose many source of intel about his bike... some craps.. some at very high level... like here...
then FSM became not so indispensable... but only a useful complement...

That's a good point.

I notice little things from Japanese to English or Italian to English translations with some frequency.

More than a few times I've seen things like "connect the black wire to dirt" when they meant earth/ground.

correct...
a bigger problem is the italian version dubbed in italian all things with a name i know better in english... and i don't know how exactly it is the name in the italian version, since it could be translated in many ways... so i have to scroll down the entire index...
repeat
my fault

In a way I like the old service manuals. I have Panhead Service Manual for 1948-1957 Rigid. Copyright 1972. As far as I can tell, it was originally owned and used by a chopper shop in Rapid City S.D. I picked it up when I bought a '55 Panhead back in '78 (in California). It also had paperwork in it from a shop in Denver Colo. So it's been around. I like the fact that the MoCo saw fit to have shop data in it, with all the clearances and specs for rebuilding most pieces. It even shows how to make different tools and jigs to test or complete a repair. All this in 225 pages. The price on the cover is printed on,$12.50!

Like stated previously,... in my experience maintenance manuals come in all flavors and levels.
Owner manuals
Technician Manuals
Factory Manuals
Parts manuals
Electrical schematics manuals
Troubleshooting manuals
Service/Repair/Maintenance manuals
Rebuild/Depot Level manuals

Some stuff is proprietary (ECU reflash) and some stuff is factory service only so no one is going to put that stuff in a manual available to the public. Don't forget liability issues because the FSM is full of warnings and caution/avoid stuff so they aren't going to show you how to fix something they'd be responsible for.

With all that going on I think we're lucky to have what we have available.

I always get the Service Manual for whatever bike I'm riding. So the answer to the original question is Yes.
