The plastic piece is not to protect the wires, it's to keep mud and gravel from being spewed all over your lower engine area. You can do away with it. You'll just start finding crap all over your swing arm.

I actually went a completely different way and just forgot to update the post. Matter of fact, I have my sporty up in TN at the Dragon right now. Been here for a couple days riding and this thing carves through the turns like no other!

have you considered making a swingarm mounted fender? The distance between the tire and fender stays the same as the fender moves with the tire and swingarm
