Default Swingarms

What are the differences between the pre-00 and 2000+ swingarms?
I have a complete 1991 1200 xlh which had both frame and swingarm modified by the previous owner, rendering the bike unable to accommodate a passenger. Looking to rectify this, I’ve sourced a 2001 frame and I believe a 2001 swingarm, which is in need of new bearings. Looking at the fiche, the pivot bolt is the same between years, but the bearings are not.
I’m in Canada where practically everything rigid mount is discontinued, (spacer, bushing, dust covers, all NLA) so I’m wondering if I can swap parts from my 91 swingarm to my 2001(?) arm?
Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Here's the Sportsterpedia page on swingarms.
I've updated the info to include all the related rigid mount parts as well.
http://www.sportsterpedia.com/doku.p...alk:evo:susp03

edit:
As far as related parts go, 2001 has a different pivot bolt and screw (part number).
The left bushing and right bearing changed also.
The dust shield, spacer and swingarm hole plug are the same.

According to JWBoon, even though the part number changed for the right bearing, it appears to be a place of origin change.
The 86-91 right bearing 47082-81 is suppose to be a (Timken LM11749) with other description "Poland PC X0242" printed on it.
The 2001 right bearing 48367-98 is suppose to be a (Timken LM11749) with other description "USA PS" printed on it.

47082-81

48367-98

The left bushing change may or may not pertain to a pivot bolt size change but just could be an origin or material change.

As for the pivot bolt change, I'm not sure what those changes were.

This is great news! So if it’s the same bearing, just manufactured somewhere else, I should be able to use the 91 bearings in the 2001 arm! Drag specialties sells replacement bearings for up to ‘99 xl’s, which should basically be the same bearings up until 2003, I believe. As soon as I paint the new swingarm, I’ll attempt it and report back!
Thanks so much!

The info in the pedia came from year model parts catalogs.
JW Boon sells NOS parts but I don't definitively rely on their pics as factual.
But from what I've gathered, that is correct.
And yes, please let us know how it goes.

Quick update: just ordered a v-twin manufacturing swingarm kit, part number 44-0540, which says it fits sportsters from 82-03! Will report back when I have the kit, and it is installed. This is the only way I have found to actually order the bushing that goes in the left side of the arm, in Canada, as the original part number is discontinued.
Kit includes shaft, bearings, bushing, circlip, spacer, and dust covers!

That kit is suppose to come with pivot bolt also.
Check lengths on the bolt just to be sure it's correct.
I have to replace my races and bearings.
I have not been paying attention to them as I should have (5000 mile inspections).
There is a lock ring between the outer races. How do you plan on pressing the outer races out?

I'd be interested to know where the bearings are made in the V-Twin kit.
Mine are the USA ones so they must have been changed by the PO down the line..
I also thought it interesting that the bearing spacer was magnetized.....

I used a slide hammer to remove the races. PITA to knock them out but they did come out.

Update:
I used a hammer and a punch to get out the races in the ‘91 swingarm, and ended up installing them with a bearing driver into the 2001 swingarm. The Vtwin kit got lost in the mail, and I got sick of waiting. Everything bolted up perfectly to the frame, so I would say the bearings are the same until at least 03!
Great pics and thanks so much for the help!
