I am a fan of having more fuel, so vote for the 4.5 gallon tank. Although; I think that each tank can look great. Handlebars, Color, Seat, Fender, etc.. all impact the overall look.

The minor changes I did on my XL883N, work to make the 4.5 gallon tank look like in belongs. At least I think so.

i love the Peanut
maybe i'm wrong... but IMO without a Peanut it's not a proper Sporty...
a great improvement was made from the 2.1 to the 3.3 gallons tank

p.s. i also understand the needs and the reasons for the guys who mounted a 4.5 gallons though

It did take H-D a few decades to improve the XL with mini-apes and forwards!

Form vs function... that's the rub for me. I have the 4.5 gallon tank so I can actually put in some decent saddle time between fuel stops when touring but damn if the peanut tank doesn't have one of the most beautiful shapes ever put on a motorcycle.

Such is my thoughts. I love my 2.2 on my 48. However that limits the bike to basically an urban bike........... or so I thought.
I jumped on my BT one day to ride from Phoenix to Cali and paid a bit of attention. It seems when I am going cross country I stop about every 90 minutes of so to either get gas, or pull in somewhere to stretch out and get a bottle of water. Now seeing how I get about 42 mpg and I carry two liter sized fuel bottles with me, then I can easily do that on the 48. I tried it and it worked.

Or so I thought, after 4 hours in the saddle of my sporty, I knew why I owned the big twin, for that big comfortable seat and the suspension in the rear that smooths out the road.

So I am back to it would be nice to get the mileage from a big tank, but that 2.2 is the most beautiful tank on a Bike I have ever seen.

However, my RK is the bike for doing long miles on.
