Default Oil line routing on an 80

Does anybody with an 80 know the correct routing for the oil line that connects at the very top of the tank? Next to the battery clamp bracket.

To be clear .... I already have everything plumbed up property but I’m trying to figure out the correct factory path/route and/or the best route the rubber house is supposed to follow.
Right now I have the hose passing under the starter then up over the top of the starter solenoid, between the rear brake line and frame... then upwards through the opening where the oil filter bracket is attached to the frame.

I’m not sure if the hose is supposed to run bellow the solenoid or over top of it. It’s definitely cut short by the P.O. so it’s limiting my options at the moment. I can’t find a clear picture of how the factory actually ran the line so that it’s out of the way as it enters the battery holder area etc.

Thanks for the reply. I was looking at that very same post earlier before I asked. I was under the impression that the 80-81 oil tank was different in the way that the hoses attached up to the reservoir.

Mine is tore down right now getting a face lift. This oil hose routing is original I think. Not sure since it was Nebraska motorcycle before I bought it and brought it to Texas.

Mine runs behind the solonoid cup, touching and grasping it like a lover in a curved embrace, going down to the oil pump fitting under the bike. Not over the top of it.

Down around tranny case cover clamped to hug the cover tight.


Then on to the oil pump. The bike bottom is on the bottom of the orange lift. Wheels are off so I cannot show the underneath pictures till later. My thread is here.

Thanks for those replies. The 80 seems to be an odd ball year that’s why I wasn’t really sure. I think the problem for routing my oil line is because the P.O. must have cut around 2-3” off the hose, making factory routing pretty much impossible, since it’s to short now.

I think for now I’ll just get a brass coupling and 2 hose clamps... to add a small length onto the hose. It’s under the seat and above the battery, so it won’t stand out and be an eye sore. I’ll replace all the oil lines next winter since all of them are showing signs of age with rubbing and stuff.

I just need to find some motorcycle oil hose. I have a big spool of Goodyear automotive hose with the correct ID but the OD is way to thick to route around ... go figure.

It is real shiny hose. Not the dull finish. I did not go with rubber because I live in the desert. My sun dry rots rubber.

The only local place that I find the correct ID & OD oil line is at an indie motorcycle shop that services vintage motorcycles. None of the usual auto supply stores have it.
