2007 XL883 Sportster owned by HAMMER PERFORMANCE, equipped as follows.

HAMMER PERFORMANCE 120+Hp Conversion Package, consisting of:
Disclosures:
  • Cranking compression is 200psi on both cylinders. It's running on 92 octane pump gas from the local Conoco.
  • This was a 5th gear pull. We did not do any 4th gear pulls.
  • We had no air cleaner in place for this pull, as the air cleaner that comes with the HPI throttle body is too small. We're developing an Air Hammer air cleaner for this application.

Details of the build:
  • SLEDGE+ CNC head porting service includes welding up the floors in the ports so that we can shape the short side better.
  • In addition to the floor work, we also altered the valve angles in these heads. We did this so that we could fit larger 2.020" intake and 1.630" exhaust valves (standard SLEDGE service includes 1.980" intake and 1.610" exhausts).
  • We also went to the latest high tech valve springs. Although our standard springs included with the SLEDGE service are state-of-the-art in beehives, they weren't up to the job with these new larger valves at higher rpm. These new springs are the next generation. They are not a beehive and not a straight wound spring either.
  • Another valvetrain change is a switch to 1.725 ratio rocker arms. We raised lift because bigger valves bring in most of their flow gains at high lift. But the plastic anti-rotation device for the lifters, used in all 06+ Sportsters, effectively limits what you can do with lobe lift. So we went to high ratio rockers instead.
  • The larger, more spread apart valves requires a bigger bore to work. That's where the 1275 kit comes in.
  • The new 1275 kit we're introducing with this package remains a drop-on, just like the 1250. No case boring is required. The additional bore size is made possible by using a special 120,000psi tensile strength steel liner. This is a significantly more expensive product, and as such, it's only applicable to our top of the line package.
  • This motor is still using it's stock fuel injectors and stock fuel pressure.

You can read more about this package here: http://www.hammerperf.com/883conversions.shtml#120hp

Also, there's a discussion thread about it here: http://www.xlforum.net/vbportal/foru...44#post5374944

2014 XL1200/1250 owned by a Charlie's Harley-Davidson customer

Comments: Typical Thunderheader torque curve ... pushing back badly down low, a real hard pull right in the middle (hence the big peak torque number), pushing back again on top, albeit not as badly. It just doesn't diffuse well, it concentrates all it's pull at one rpm to the detriment of others. Unfortunately, a lot of pipes do this.

Since power is just torque times rpm, the drop in torque at high rpm hurts the top power number. In our testing, the Patriot beat the Thunderheader by 6hp on top.

Despite the pipe choice, it's still a very respectable result. Congrats to the guys at Charlie's HD on a job well done.

This is a 2008 XL883/1250 owned by a valued HAMMER PERFORMANCE customer. Equipped as follows:

HAMMER PERFORMANCE 100+hp XL883/1250 Conversion Package, consisting of:
Comments: More than 3 years after we first introduced it, the 100+hp conversion package continues to be one of our most popular packages, and results like this are the reason why. It's put a lot of 883's into the 100 club over the years.

Default The 100+hp package strikes again ...

This is a 2011 XL883/1250 owned by a valued HAMMER PERFORMANCE customer. Equipped as follows:

HAMMER PERFORMANCE 100+hp XL883/1250 Conversion Package, consisting of:
Comments: exact same setup as the previous chart, with essentially the exact same result. Like I said, it's a very popular package.

This one was particularly gratifying to see, as the customer first went through some trials and tribulations attempting to build on his basic conversion and not getting to where he wanted to be, or even getting to where we thought he would be for that matter. We hate seeing a customer come up short of his goals, and it causes us stress. But then he stepped up and did it right and went with the full 100+ package and got this. So we were as happy to see this as he was!

This result shows the difference between an 883-1250 conversion and a 1200-1250 conversion. It's the same bike, and everything is the same except for the heads and the matching pistons. Specifically:
  • 2007 XL883
  • Stock 1200 heads in blue, stock 883 heads in red
  • HAMMER 1250 kit with flat top 1250 pistons in blue, reverse dome 1250 pistons in red (both configurations have a 10:1 compression ratio)
  • Stock "W" cams
  • Patriot Defender exhaust
  • Air Hammer air cleaner
  • Tuned with a Powervision

I generated this chart because I got an email from a customer asking me if 883 heads are better for bottom end and 1200 heads better for top end. I realized I had all the dyno data so I just made the chart to answer his question. I thought it might be of general interest too, so I'm posting it.

As you can see, the smaller valves and ports of the 883 heads did not really bring much of anything to the bottom end power. In fact, the difference is within the repeatability of the measurement, especially considering that these results were not taken on the same day. I would not read anything into that minor difference down low, it may not be real.

On the other hand, there's no mistaking the top side advantage to the 1200 heads. The bigger valves and better ports make a big difference.

No big revelation here, just thought some folks might find it interesting.

109hp @ 6650rpm and 96ft-lb @ 5179rpm (chart has torque in Nm)

2012 Sportster XL1200:
- Hammer Performance 1250 kit with 10.0:1 flat tops
- Hammer Performance crush air cleaner
- Dynojet PowerVision and TargetTune (wideband lambdas + closed loop)
- Screamin Eagle .536 cams
- S&S adjustable push rods & collapsible covers
- Bronze oil pump drive gear
- Stiffer (20%) clutch spring
- Ported 1200EFI heads with 1,850" intake valves and stock exhaust valves
- Exhaust is HEAVILY modified V&H RSD Tracker 2-1
- All the rest is stock

Difference with the two results are head pipes (properly tuned for each pull). Lower results had original head pipes i.e. rear cylinder's head pipe was shorter than front cylinder's. Top numbers have rear cylinder's head pipe modified to same length as the front has.
