Default my local dealership closed today

i stopped by for the last time to take advantage of the 70% discount on remaining parts inventory.the items i got today were not for my ironhead but for my evo.the dealership was bought several years ago after the former owner passed on.the current owner also owns 2 other dealerships.i think that's why he decided to consolidate this one into his 2 other.this is possibly due to the covid-19 shut down this spring.i still think if someone had bought this as their only dealership it might still be here tomorrow.

Same thing happened here last year I think.
Dealership in Columbus owned the one here.
They sold to a new owner who closed the dealership here.
I still get a weird feeling as I pass by the building.
It looks so lifeless and eerie. Kinda sad.
But the one here rarely had more than one or two customers every time I went in there for several years.
So the business did look frail for awhile before they closed.

My dealership started internet vehicle sales and deliveries a couple of years ago. They told me then that if I buy anything from HD.com to have it shipped to them and they get credit for the sale, helps keep their doors open.

I live in the middle of nowhere, yet I have a dealership that's only a couple miles away.

Back in 2003 I called them and left a message asking about having some work done on my '82 XLH, and they didn't even bother to return my call.

So I don't do much business with them. I have an Indie about 25 miles away who's happy to take care of what I need.

A lot of this will be down to demographics.

Once all the cashed up retired old guys bought their new shiny toys there just wasn't nough young people coming in behind them to keep the whole plot going.

This might be a shock to most but as I understand it HD's financial fortunes are looking "very shaky".

Not that I care one whit. I would no ore buy a new Harley thank I would a new Hula Hoop. Neither hold much interest for me.

And Harley can't survive living off us old farts buying parts from them, which we don't do.

The real money in dealerships has always been in the second hand bikes. You hope your workshop will break even at least. New bikes ? It's very easy for dealers to lose money on new bikes. Trust me, I've been there.

As we push more and more young people down into poverty expect to see more businesses shut their doors. Us Baby Boomers are bowung out.
