Default Help With A Honda

I know this isn't a question about Sportsters, but I know someone has the answer to this. Please help if you can. My friend from work picked up a 1983 honda shadow that runs good, but he has a hard time starting it. it has an enricher and i don't know if this is different from a choke? seems to start really hard when shut off hot then try to restart it. doesn't matter if he just turns it over, puts on the enricher or holds the throttle open. just turns over and over then suddenly it will start if his battery doesn't die first. really sucks when we go for a ride and have to monkey with it to get it running every time it is shut off. it runs awesome once we're riding. do you use the enricher the same way as a choke? Where should he look to solve this? Thanks everyone.

Enrichener is what we have on carbed EVO Sportsters. It adds fuel, whereas a choke has a butterfly to block air flow.

Hard starting hot may be too rich idle circuit, float level too high, float level not quite shutting off (debris in float valve)...that is where I would start.

I've had 7 Hondas and 3 Yamahas, as well as 2 Sportsters, but the issues are very much the same.

Before tearing into the carb, be sure that his plugs look good, with good spark.

Thanks guys. I have suggested he run some sea foam first and see what happens. I really hate working on dual carb bikes as i don't know much about carbs and synchronizing them.

Don't be concerned about carb sync. I've had one 4 carb bike and 5 dual carb bikes (3 were CV)...never an issue. For normal street use, just adjust the cables so all the carbs start to move at the same time.

Syncro should not be an issue, bad battery or neg lead from the battery might.

Those are Keihin CV carbs and are generally very good from factory....check to see if someone has pulled the epa plugs for the low speed air jet. It was needed back then to get any kind of start and off idle performance.

like any bike start with the basics, like Ireeman said check the cables, my 92 sporty had a bad ground cable and it would do the same thing run fine then start, then shut down, run, the dealerships Tucson and Phoenix couldn't find the problem and I took it the dealership in my hometown, this was 92 when it was new and the tech who had 20 plus years of experience, had it fixed before I got to my parents house where I was staying.

Hondas are usually good runners, but an almost thirty year old bike is bound to have some worn or corroded parts.

They have a good rep for having the starter solenoid/main relay not work when they are old and get hot...

do basics. check for a clean firing via a timing light or some inline spark testers. once you know that the ign is not dropping on you, the run compression/leakage test. there is nothing that can help low compression short of a proper repair. if that is in order, then look at the fuel sys. that said, is this machine gravity as some hondas like the ace shadows and others use a fuel pump.
