Yes. The coil is a path to ground; it needs to be disconnected when using a test light or multi-meter to set static timing.

Other points:

Narrow cam lobe must be located counterclockwise from the cam follower.

Front cylinder must be on compression stroke when the flywheel mark is centered in the observation hole.

See pp 5F-13 on, in the FSM for the gory details.

Dave (Morris Magnetos) sells a "Buzz Box" for use with magnetos. Worth every penny.
Easy and simple to use it isn't simply a light and a battery - it measures induction.
A led light for us deaf bas&ards and a buzzer for us blind bas&ards.
It can be used to check battery and coil systems and relays as well.
For $80 you too can set your points correctly. Exactly.
