Correct if I am wrong: It looks like replacing the stock vacuum petcock with a manual petcock could prevent a potential problem.

I never had a problem with my carb before I replaced my stock petcock but I was afraid of failure and installed a Golan stainless steel one. I didn't have to adjust anything and the only modification to the carb was to plug the vacuum hole where the hose was attached. Now, as a precaution for potentially long term parking, I close the petcock and let the carb run empty before I turn off the key to keep the carb clean. I also keep the tank full of stabilized non-ethanol fuel in the tank during these times. This procedure has been working for years and I've never had to adjust the carb.
