'82 to '85 were using o-rings for the pushrod covers iirc. Owned 2 from these period, both bikes didn't leak at the pushrod covers. Did a top end on an XLX-61 ('83?), it used o-rings.

There are "band aid" work arounds for just about everything.

Zip ties, duct tape, fencing wire, silicone sealants, pipe wrenches, pliers - the list goes on and on.

Don't become a player in the story of this bike that was a "PO did this" thing.

Use the rubber seals. They work better than cork IMO.

Remove the covers and push rods. It's not really that big a job.

If you treat the bike with respect, like any good servant, it will work for you.

So if the original poster has an 82, would there be round section o-rings or square section corks needed? The tubes could have been replaced with earlier ones, or maybe early 82 still used the cork type?

my tubes had been replaced so that is a possibility, but I went the the blue silicones, not the corks
