From what I see, the hardtail takes the shock more at the axles, where the suspended tail transfers the shock to the top of the shock, right under the rider. On the hardtail, the whole bike takes the hit, and with a decent front end, it just doesnt feel as bad to me.

This is a case of the chicken and the egg. The Ironhead sportster came first, so calling an Ironhead a shovelhead sportster may have roots all the way back to the first shovelhead, but it's as ignorant of the facts now as it was then.
