My Arlen Ness Petcock (#07-030 - $35) has been functioning very well for years... It's got the 5/16" outlet so you'll need to work a bit to get a 1/4" fuel line on it...

My Pingel doesn't have a reserve setting, but it was about 1/2 price in their bargain bin.

I thought I had it for a while, but fuel was still trickling out from the top of the nut. It could be the threads on the tank are so rusty and banged up that it's hard to get a good seal.

Anyway, I took the nut off my old petcock and put it on the new petcock without the filter and it works fine that way for now. I haven't had a chance to try a different brand of petcock, yet.

You have to put the nut in the center of the threaded part of the petcock. As you tighten it, it draws the petcock and the tank bung together. If you don't start out with it centered, one end will bottom out in the threads before the other end is fully tight, and it will leak - either from the tank side or the petcock side, depending on which end the nut was closer to. By removing the plastic strainer, you have given more room for the assembly to get tight on that side, making up for starting the nut off-center.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it (especially if you don't know what you're doing). Most Sportster problems are owner-induced.
