ELectrical Issue 96 xl1200s
Key on....hit start and headlight dims and no start.
Turn key switch on and headlight is dim sometimes and bright at times until you push start then dims and no start.
Battery checks out good. Just wondering what else to look for?
Thanks for any help.

You need to isolate the problem. Starter switch? Wiring issue? Starter issue? Solenoid issue? OK, now ya got something to try. Turn ignition on. DO NOT PRESS STARTER BUTTON. Jump the solenoid to battery. If it starts, it's a switch/wiring issue.

When you're having issues with the electrical system, use this Sportsterpedia section
about checking the battery cables, voltages and grounds - DO THIS AS MAINTENACE, TOO:
http://sportsterpedia.com/doku.php/t...place_to_start
How did you test the battery? Do the 4 voltage checks as listed in the link above. Report your meter readings.
Be sure the ground wires are not broken or corroded at the rear motor mount.
Have you done any work lately on the handlebar switches? Check for pinched wires. They may be grounding.
Do you have extra stuff on your keyring beside the Sportster key? Other things blowing in the wind can sometimes create stress on the keyswitch & eventually break the internal contacts (causing intermittent operation or shorts).
