the stuff in the cam cover only provides a signal for the coils to fire. the original question was about the life of coils. i do not think (my opinion here) the ignition has any extra wear on coils. it is mostly about the quality of each coil, the heat and vibration they put up with and their age.

There you go TMak, what did I say!!
My ignition went about the same time as my coil. I shall be cutting up a rubber mat and popping a strip between the coil bracket and the frame to try to reduce some vibration.

actually lost only one coil since 1974. in 1975, i took the front end off a chevy impala and the coil was cracked, ran it a number of years before it failed. the second was put on in the 90's and i removed it to go with an accel coil due to the engine mods done last year. the accel coil is excellant and carries a lifetime warranty.
you might want to check the wiring. copper will change characteristics over time. if the copper has gained resistance, ohm's laws says if voltage goes down, amperage will go up and it is current draw that causes heat build up.

Ah, that must be the kind of heat mentioned earlier then!
I was assuming that because you were in California or Texas etc... that the Southern heat was getting to them!! We only have about 5 minutes of sun per year in the UK, so I ruled that out.
Your reasoning is flawless kind Sir, I'll be checking over the w/end.
Cheers

Wondering if anyone has ever made a list of the various SE ignition modules designed for the 4-speed carb Evo XL motor and what the differences were. My basket had no electrical parts so will start with the 32400-80a sensor assy I guess and 32402-83 rotor per the HD parts breakdown. I have been eyeballing a programmable SE 32655-98 but am not sure the available curves would be appropriate for my motor.

Trying to get ignition components lined up for my 86-7 XLH's resurrection. Working from several baskets and needing many parts. Wanted to get the ignition right using parts I have accumulated and wondered if anyone might have the bulletin for the SE module and coil I have. The module has 6 dip switches with readable info on what each does. Was hoping the module bulletin might show some more information on how to apply them. Have a NOS ignition harness add on 32408-90 that does not list the SE module in its "use on" list (listed below) but was thinking it might only list the non-SE factory modules. Possibly the SE bulletin would verify it crosses to one of those. Harness bulletin was dated 7-1-90 and SE module PN has -98 suffix.

My SE module and coil PN's ...
32655-98 module
31647-97 coil

Bulletin "Use-on" PN's for ign harness (32408-90) ...
32405-91
32410-91
32419-91
32432-91
32420-87a
32421-85a

It is a 7 pin plug on both module pigtail and harness, hoping I can marry this stuff together without frying it and use it in a beneficial way to my bike's performance. Was going to use a standard 32400-80a trigger plate and S+S 55-124 rotor, dont know if S+S is better just figuring it might be ... couldnt find an S+S trigger plate. Not sure if you use a VOES switch, my manual shows a separate switch .. I dont see it in my parts diagram .. is it part of carb?? SW1 on module is "VOES .. Retard or Normal"

Just aced a 59584-82 rear fender extension had been hunting for sometime to go along with my NOS belt setup and 88 1200 wheel-set and pistons. My 86 1100 heads are being treated to 7mm valves and being further worked in ID right now. Expect completion soon. Have to get oiling system wired with the 07 pump mod, new lines, filter mount and cooler along with ignition. Wondered if there was an improved oil filter mount setup I might use with the pump mod.

Don't have that. But maybe this will help.

***EDIT***

After 2 days worth of googling and searching various forums, I found out that Dynatek makes the Screamin Eagle modules. For anyone else who may need this same info, here it is:

Printed that out .. 10 pages .. looks like the manual for my unit as plug and dip switch listing look like mine .. just didnt see any HD PN's to verify with. If my SE 32655-98 is identical or a rebadged Dynatek 2000, now I have the book on it. I believe it is. See explanation of VOES dip switch and explanations of selectable advance curves as well as single and dual fire setups COOL!THANKS!!

Sending my unidentified cams to Justin at Leineweber Cams who will chart them on his 86-90 test engine and send me results so I have somewhat of a "cam card". Hoping to get flow and cc numbers on my cylinder heads being modified currently at Hammer so I can put all together and better understand my hodge-podge 1st HD engine build results. Hope to have a smile on my face and not booger anything.

Noticed per the Dynatek 2000 manual that the VOES switch is recommended for street bikes vs race bikes and that the Dyna module does not do the same thing the factory ignition module does which is just slam full advance when the VOES trips … it analizes engine conditions then varies advance appropriately. I am thinking VOES is somewhat similar to vacuum advance on an automotive application and the programable advance curves in the module are like different springs in the distributor controlling centrifugal advance. I have noticed that there are different VOES switches with variable cut-in vacuum points and wondering how to make a best guess at that … looks like 3,4,5,or 6 Hg ??

Just scored a Dynatek DC6-2 CDI single fire coil designed to work with my module. I will need to find Dyna umbilical as it has 2 plugs .. no screw-top terminals on coil. Dynatek manual said to order 32402-83a rotor as module wont work with earlier rotor … cross to S+S 55-127 vs 55-124 … different window widths. Ordered 127 rotor and 32400-80a trigger plate. Believe my Screamin Eagle coil is a rebadged Dyna, it is appropriate for dual fire I have umbilical for so I am just about setup to be able to go either way. Since my cams are extra long duration I am going to try single fire first.
