Default oil pump install

I will be putting the oil pump back on shortly. I have a new James Gaskets set. I have the FPM and FSM.

Was wondering if there's any particular nuances to it I should know about that the FSM doesn't include?

i've found to get it timed properly because of the spiral drive gear you have to lead it a bit before you start moving it in.you'll see what i mean if you try to time it by eye before installing it.most people won't get it the first time.but you'll learn.

So is there a way to mis-time it or easily do it so wrong the engine gets ruined?

.. I would Say STOP , Locate a Service Manual and read up, the Breather ( pre 77 ) can be installed wrong, once you get your manual you will see that the pump is timed to the Pinion Gear, the Pushrods need to be removed and the Cam Cover Removed to witness this

Okay here's where I'm at. I haven't looked at this project in a year. My memory SUCKS at my age now.

The FSM says to put heads on and take off in one procedure along with the push rods and push rod covers too I believe. I don't recall having to have the heads off in order to get the push rods out. Can't you pull the push rods out without having to take the heads off first??

I'm wanting to install the oil pump and put the heads on along with the top motor mount so I can hang it from the ceiling with a come along and get it into the frame. I'm all set with the come along. Once what I have here is in the frame, then I'll put all the other engine parts in. IIRC I can do this in this order but I really don't remember. Can I do it this way?

Install the Pinion Gear, it can only go on One way, see the Timing mark on the Pinion Gear Face ‘that is your start point ( you do not need to remove heads to install - remove pushrods, what manual is that Info coming from ? Your oil pump must be installed prior to setting the engine in the frame.

Correct, it is timed with the vertical flywheel Mark ( BEFORE Top Dead Center Vertical Mark) In the timing hole, that should place the Pin Gear Timing mark at about 11:00, the pre 77 pump breather DOT within the notch , Cam Timing is then off the Pinion Gear At about 11:00 as your starting point of Cam Installation
