You apparently had a mechanic that is not ver familiar with Harley front ends. You either got a very new mechanic or one not familiar with Harley's. From my experience, if you use a Harley dealer, you'll get a newbie mechanic on a Sportster, they usually have the experienced mechanics on the Big Twins, the more expensive bikes. You will usually get the best work done by Independent mechanics. They are usually the best from my experience. They're usually former Dealer Mechanics that were the best in the shop. Try asking on here about good independent mechanics in your area. Any mechanic not familiar with spacers on Sportster front ends obviously doesn't know what he is doing.

I agree that the guy isn't an experienced (or remotely competent) mechanic but this is not strictly a Harley specific issue... spacers were used on every make and model I've ever worked on.
