It sounds like it's all in pieces, i'm probably goin to check it out today and i'll take a good look at it. Might take some pictures and let you guys tell me what you think based on that, if they'll upload i haven't been able to upload pictures to my gallery so we'll see.

Are there any quirks and inherited problems with the old IH that i should be aware of.

Yes.. but you will have to get to know her before she'll tell you anything.

Not worth $800 unless all the motor, clutch and tranny parts are there. My 2¢.

If the title is clear you are okay If the frame is after market then there is aproblem In the past people have taken a after market frame that they bought without mso and they put the motor in the frame and registered to the motor. Ive have seen vin welded to the frame on a block of steel to the frame with the vin # .In my opinion as long the motor runs clear you are okay.

I had the same amount of experience as you when I bought mine. Since then I have learnt to weld, machine out parts and learn to appreciate the work of others. The building has been really interesting and worth the effort.

I cant comment on the price and ownership issues but will say that I do find my build frustrating at times but the achievements are worth every second of the effort and thought that I have put into them.

dbaker - fellow utah'tahn... Salt Lake

I'd never owned an Ironhead either, but got into a '61 basket. Most nec. parts were gone. Likely be a year or more till she runs. No regrets. Can be frustrating figuring shit out, but the guys here are a great source for info and locating parts.

Go for it, good luck & post pics

Just so you undestand the diferance.. I have 2 runing Ironheads..my 85 I paid for 2200 bucks,,I put a clutch and tires, and a carb tune to get it runing good, My 79 cost me 1600 bucks, I put a carb on it to get it to run. It neads tires and a battery to have it on the road. ....I guess my point is you get what you pay for, save your pennys and get a motor together at least.

But that me....good luck

I got a 76 all mostly original matching case and frame not running for 2000, he was asking 3500, got it on a whim, he said it was rebuilt, but who knows, was in a storage container for 10 years.. it needed carb cleaned new starter, solenoid, battery, regulator, front brake seized up so took it off, had to work out alot of kinks but it's a great bike.

I'd say you'd probably spend that getting a basket up n road worthy.

But this site is absolutely perfect if you have any questions, lots of knowledge and we all enjoy shop talk. I'm thankful for these fellas that's for sure

got my 80 for 1000.00, had been setting for close to 20 years. the clutch was out of it but it came with a new one so put that in. Changed the oil put new plugs and points in and a battery and changed all rubber hoses (dry rot). Cleaned out the gas tank and carb and it started right up. Since then I rebuilt the front forks and brake master cylinders and calipers, new chain, pushrod tube o'rings, a speedo and front tire and a few other odds and ends. so I'm still under 1500 for it which in my book is a good deal. Offer 5 or 600 and see if he takes it, can always sell the parts and get your money back if need be plus some change to keep.

Fenders- nice to see a fellow utard. If your ever ridin down hwy 6 to moab give me a shout and we'll go for a cruise im in Helper it's about half way to moab from SL

Hogmania- That's kinda what i'm thinking that the parts have to atleast be worth that much, so worst case scenario i turn around and sell em

I'll give you guys the best deals if it comes down to that.

I wan't able to go see it yesterday i had to finish up a tank for a customer but i'm going to try to get over there this week.

I appreciate all the info, you guys have been alot of help the last few months
