Rustoleum hi-temp brush painted from the box store straight over chrome, rust, etc with little to no prep.

I never pay attention to what they looked like when new. I paint it to look like what I want.
As far as painting the heads and jugs. I have painted many and tried different methods and brands. The best results I have obtained are from using Duplicolor engine enamel. It is available in many colors at most auto parts stores.
Prepping the pieces is critical to getting good results. Remove all rust, corrosion and oxidation down to clean metal.
To get good long term quality results you need to use the Duplicolor engine enamel in 3 parts and follow the instructions on the can pertaining to time between coats. They have primer, paint and clear coat. Not using all 3 will give you short term results. Ask me how I know.
Using the 3 part method, I have several projects that still look fresh after several years and many miles.

Good luck.

It's just a clear coat that seals and protects the paint. If you spray it on gloss paint it looks gloss. If you spray it on flat it looks flat.

Epiphany? If I ever get to build a knucklehead with my budget it will surely be a basket case project of many acquired parts. I just cant see going through all of the time and work to build a bike that will look bone stock. When its all said and done its still not an original bike as its been restored.
I like to build a bike from many parts and pieces that is safe, reliable and with a mild custom look.

Here are a couple examples of my work. I don't believe either of these bikes looked better when they were brand new.
