Default Clean my Clock

73 XLH 1000
Is there an easy way to open up the clocks and clean em up? One of mine has some white dust in it. They work fine.
Maybe leave well enough alone?
I have the bars off anyway to fill the forks. Thought maybe while I’m in there...
I pulled the tach out of the housing but it was not apparent it would come apart easily. It’s pretty sturdy.

I’m not sure if you can open then, you may be best off living with it. There are others on here much more knowledgeable than me and they will be along shortly.

XLF member, petesponies, replaced his broken glass although Evo but the process may be the same.
Looks like the bezel presses on and gently prys off.

There are a lot of youtube 'instructions' on how to do this. Like this example:
https://youtu.be/4VHEl9IG0w8

...but if things go wrong you are in a worse situation than how it looks now. If you have some kind of spare parts for it (glas) I would try it. If not, I would leave it as it is.

Clocks !? I don't see no clocks !!!

Suggest you read thru this thread in its entirety:

http://xlforum.net/forums/showthread.php?t=2042797

Bottom line:
  • there are professionals out there that can dis-assemble / recondition your tach but from what they told me, the bezel is destroyed in the process. The pros do have the parts & equipment to press a new bezel on. The price is $$$.
  • if you just need a new tach, they are out there. Get on google / e-bay & pound in the part # 92051-70..... tough to beat $24.95 USD.
  • if you want the speedo re-conditioned, I'd suggest..... bite the bullet & pay for a pro to do it.
As always, do whatever works for you.

Thanks guys. I was hoping it might open up without the prying of the bezel.
I had success with cleaning up the clocks off a 75 Honda last winter. On the other hand these HD clocks seem more substantial and heavily built. No plastic. So I anticipate a fight.
I am going to shelve this til riding season is over and may tackle it then.

I made some inquiries about just getting the glass off and clean the gauge. I think I was quoted $150. Too rich for my blood so I [don't laugh] took a feather and wangled it up along the side and into the gauge It definitely worked to a certain extent. YRMV

It looks, to me, like the tach has been opened before due to the silicone bead around the inside edge of the chrome bezel.
