Default Cleaning clutch

Hi guys,

My transmission is full of steel blasting shot from some botched attempt at cleaning up the outside of the engine by a previous owner.

It's real tiny sand-sized bits of steel, and it's everywhere... The engine hasn't been run since it was blasted. I've got the trans dismantled, the gears etc are all easy enough to clean with solvent but I'm just wondering how I go back cleaning the clutch. It's not been operated since the blasting so there definitely isn't shot between the plates. Are these wet clutch assemblies ok being submersed in water? Solvent? Without affecting the clutch material. Just to do the outside really, I don't want to pull it all apart at the moment

Use brake cleaner for the clutch plates. But you will need take it apart.
Some solvents may react with the clutch material.
Don't skimp on the labor or cleaning everything the right way on this.

Also look for metal sticking to the magnets in the rotor/stator assembly.
I've used wood glue to coat the magnetics, when dry I peeled it off and most
of the debris came off with the dried glue.

If no one pulled the clutch there's probably no debris between the plates. I have no experience with it, but I think I would use diesel oil (= diesel fuel) and a brush to get rid of the stuff. If the clutch was pulled, chances are that it's now on the friction material of the plates. That would probable mean you have to disassemble the clutch and clean the plates or, even better, replace them while your in there.

and EVERY bearing in a space where there is blast residue WILL need replacing, or short life expectancy will result- its pretty much impossible to get them 100% clean.

I would agree to a certain extent but in this case the contamination is only the blasting media itself, which is reasonably-sized steel grains. No chance of missing any, and no fine grit or powder fortunately

You might be okay then. If the bearings roll freely once they are clean you could be good to go. I also use cans of brake/carb cleaner and contact cleaner to help get things really clean.
