Default 2009 Speedometer Wiring/Colors

Hi All,

I got a new Cycle Standard speedometer for my 2009 Sportster XL and I am in the process of figuring out the wiring.

I have removed the front turn signals already, if that matters.

For the wiring on the Cycle Standard is has the following:

ORANGE, Sensor Power
BLACK, ground
GREEN, signal
RED, Battery
Black, Ground

Can I remove the original speedo and just replace it with this one? And, if so, what wires do I need to splice it onto after the female Molex connector.
In other words, what wires correspond to those above in the original speedo?

Black is ground of course.

The original has :
brown/grey
Orange
Orange w white line
Green with purple line
Yellow/white- which I think is the oil light?
Brown

Thanks for any advice you can give!

You didn't post what model??? - Did it have something like this in the description "Compatible with all '95-'03 OEM Harley Davidson sensors and most aftermarket sensors"...

On a 2009 Sportster, the gauges communicate with the ECM (Engine Control Module) using the SDB (Serial Data Bus) which is a digital signal data line - The VSS (Vehicle Speed Signal) goes from the engine to the ECM - the ECM massages the information and sends that information over the SDB to the Speedo, Tach & TSM...

The type of speedometer listed above requires the older VSS signal (that went directly to the Speedo) or must have an external speed sensor placed near the front or rear wheel...

Do you have an external sensor?

For connections, here is what HD uses for Color/Function:
HD BLACK wire is Ground
HD ORANGE wire is Keyswith Power (Instrument Fuse)
HD ORANGE/White wire is Keyswitch Power (Acc Fuse)
HD BROWN/Grey wire is constant Power
HD YELLOW/White wire is the Low Fuel signal
HD LtGREEN/Violet wire is the SDB (Serial Data Bus)

Yes, it is for a 2009 model specifically. All it says. Got it from Low Brow customs.

I don't have an external sensor. Can I just wire it and leave off the wires I don't need or will that screw up the SDB and ECM?

Thanks!

Can you post a specific model number? -or- a direct link to their page that shows this speedometer?

I could find no additional information on the Low Brow Customs website... So...

Your 2009 OEM Sportster Connector 20A/B should have:
1 - ORANGE/White --- Power from Accessory Fuse - to the OEM Speedo
2 - BROWN/Grey ---- From Battery Fuse - to the OEM Speedo
3 - BROWN ---------- Right Turn Signal (flash) - to your indicator lights
4 - WHITE ----------- HiBeam for Headlight - to your indicator lights
5 - VIOLET ---------- Left Turn Signal (flash) - to your indicator lights
6 - ORANGE --------- Power from Instrument Fuse - to your indicator lights & OEM Speedo
7 - LtGREEN/Violet -- Serial Data Bus (get speedo info from ECM) - to the OEM Speedo
8 - TAN ------------ Neutral Switch (grounded is lit) - to your indicator lights
9 - GREEN/Yellow --- Oil Pressure (grounded is lit) - to your indicator lights
10- YELLOW/White - Low Fuel Level Signal - to the OEM Speedo
11- --blank--
12- BLACK --------- Ground - Common to everything

Your 2009 OEM VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) uses the following wires (Connector 65A/B):
A - BLACK/Red - Power (This is 5v supplied by ECM)
B - BLACK/Blue - Signal Output
C - BLACK ------ Ground

Possible wiring - IF the HD VSS is compatible with the Speedo expected signals...

In order to get a sensor input to YOUR speedo, you would have to run new wires to connector 65B
which is on the VSS:
From VSS PinA - BLACK/Red - Power ??? ------ to your Speedo ORANGE - Sensor Power (What voltage is this?)
From VSS PinB - BLACK/Blue - Signal Output --- to your Speedo GREEN -- Signal
From VSS PinC - BLACK ---- - Ground --------- to your Speedo BLACK -- Ground

The remaining connectors would be:
HD Connector 20 --------- to Speedo Color/Function
Pin6 (ORANGE) ----------- to your Speedo RED (for keyswitched power)
Pin12 (BLACK) ------------ to your Speedo BLACK (for common Ground)

If I were you, I would call Low Brow Customs to verify this is what they expect you to do...
