Default Clunking into 1st after Clutch is engaged and shifter is pressed

2003 with original 5 speed transmission, new clutch cable by Terry Cable, non-synthetic primary fluid, and Energy One Clutch with 15% spring plate.

50% of the time that I go from neutral to 1st gear, when I pull in the clutch and shift into 1st, the transmission does not go into 1st. It feels/sounds like it actually goes into 1st a second or two seconds later, or as I start to release the clutch. This does not happen every time. The rest of the gears work just fine, and the bike rides fine. This happened before and after I installed the Energy One clutch plates. Any help?

Did you check the shifter adjustment when you had the Primary open?

Here's the Sportsterpedia comment & Link:

Be sure to carefully adjust the shifter pawl as outlined in the factory service manual. This procedure is critical to center it's travel of movement to create accurate gear shifts. You must use a #32 drill bit for accuracy - no other size works properly.

See Page 6-33/34 in the 2003 FSM...

Did you correctly adjust the Clutch Release & the new Clutch Cable adjuster links? Does the clutch drag at all (like it wants to pull the bike forward even when the clutch lever is fully pulled against the grip)?
